In 1868, a Canadian militia officer, Lieutenant-Colonel George T. Denison, published a book on cavalry tactics based upon observations he had made during the American Civil War. Denison realized that new weapons and the extensive use of railways had changed the nature of warfare, and he proposed that cavalry forces should be trained as mounted infantrymen. While the British military establishment rejected Denison's ideas, the German army readily adopted many of his proposals. After suffering bitter defeats in the early stages of the Boer War, the British army also began to adopt many of Denison's tactical innovations in 1900.
