On 1 September, German armies attacked Poland. The French and British governments issued an ultimatum to the German government, demanding the withdrawal of all German troops from Polish territory. When the German government did not comply, the British and French governments declared war on Germany 3 September 1939. Unlike the situation in 1914, the British did not declare was on behalf of Canada and the other Dominions. The Canadian government declared war on Germany, 10 September 1939.
