During the summer and fall of 1778, Canadian militia, British rangers, and Iroquois warriors had terrorized American settlements in New York and Pennsylvania. As a result, General John Sullivan and General James Clinton led a large American expedition into Mohawk (Iroquois Confederacy) lands from 11 August to 14 September 1779. They burnt villages and destroyed crops and stores of food.

Farther south, Colonel Daniel Brodhead led a force from Fort Pitt north into the territory of the Seneca, Cayuga, Oneida, and Onondaga (Iroquois Confederacy). After the American offensives, the Canadian-Iroquois raids subsided.
