History has a way of taking sudden and unexpected turns. As the 21st century opened the most likely immediate future for the Canadian military seemed to be to continue dealing with the consequences of the collapse of the Soviet Union. Perhaps a more robust form of peace keeping than we were accustomed to in the 1970s and 1980s would be required, but even that would probably decrease in intensity as the newly independent republics found their places in the world...
Unexpected WarsFollowing al-Qaeda's attack on the World Trade Center in New York on September 11, 2001, Canada assists the anti-Taliban forces in Afghanistan. The LER's immediate focus, however, is Bosnia-Herzegovina.
A Hot War in AfghanistanIn 2005, Canada's commitments in Afghanistan ramped up and the LER contributed troops to the Defence and Security Platoon, which deployed to Afghanistan in January 2006.
Back on the Home FrontLER contingents participate in anniversary commemorations, visiting batttlefields at Ortona, Vimy, and in the Netherlands, while The Regiment continues its long and proud tradition of contributing to Canada's defence.
