At the conclusion of the Gulf War on 27 February 1991, the United Nations (UN) organized the UN Iraq-Kuwait Observation Mission (UNIKOM) and the UN Special Commission (UNSCOM). UNIKOM monitors the demilitarized zone along the Iraq-Kuwait border. The 1,440-man force initially included 310 Canadian officers and men. UNSCOM is responsible for the inspection of Iraqi military installations and factories. It has a mandate to supervise the destruction of any biological or chemical weapons discovered during UN inspections. Nine Canadian officers currently serve with UNSCOM.
