Edmonton Public Schools Curriculum: Military History 7 begins with a study of colonial Canada, but many features of Canada's Military History will be useful in the second half of the course. Below are a series of activities designed to enhance the learning experience of Grade 7 students. Activity #1 Using plaster of paris and whatever other materials may be available, have students construct a replica of the Battle of Vimy Ridge (or some other appropriate battle). http://www.vac-acc.gc.ca/general/sub.cfm?source=history/firstwar/vimy http://www.civilization.ca/collect/csintroe.html http://www.vac-acc.gc.ca/general/sub.cfm? Berton, Pierre, Vimy. Toronto: McClelland and Stewart, 1986. Christie, N.M., Winning the Ridge: The Canadians at Vimy Ridge, 1917. Nepean: CEF Books, 1998. N.M. Christie, For King and Empire (1998) Activity #2 Have students research recruiting or wartime posters and create a poster of their own that reflects a common theme in the medium. http://digital.library.mcgill.ca/warposters/ Choko, Marc H. Canadian War Posters: 1914-1918, 1939-1945. Laval, Quebec: Editions du Meridien, 1994. Morton, Desmond and J. L. Granatstein. Marching to Armageddon: Canadians and The Great War, 1914 - 1919. Toronto: Lester & Orpen Dennys, 1989. Activity #3 Divide students into pairs and have them design a timeline of Canadian military history that portrays key events from Confederation to the present. Each pair could be responsible for a decade, or, in the case of the two world wars, a single year. The timeline could then be displayed. http://www.vac-acc.gc.ca/general/sub.cfm?source=history Des Morton, A Military History of Canada. Toronto: McClelland and Stewart, 1992. Activity #4 Arrange a visit to the Loyal Edmonton Regiment Museum. What are the strengths and weaknesses of both web sites and museums when they examine very similar content areas? Activity #5 Have students prepare a brief oral or written report on an individual involved in Canada's military past. This individual may be a well-known or someone who needs to be rescued from obscurity. |
