Canadian forces led the first Allied attempt to regain a foothold in Europe, the disastrous attack at Dieppe in August 1942. By late 1942, however, the Allied position was beginning to improve. Hitler's invasion of Russia had stalled, the US had joined the Allied cause, Japan's navy had met defeat at Midway, and Britain was challenging Germany in North Africa.
