Germany attempted to defeat Britain by establishing air and naval superiority. Canadian pilots fought in the Royal Canadian Air Force and the Royal Air Force. The Royal Canadian Navy played an increasingly important role escorting merchant vessels carrying vital supplies to Britain and Russia, which joined the Allies after Germany attacked Russia in June 1941. The Allies desperate position was made worse in late 1941 when Japan overran Hong Kong.
