UN Mission in El Salvador: 1991-1995

After the defeat of the Sandinistas in the elections of February 1990, the United Nations (UN) decided to organize a mission to oversee the establishment of a stable and democratic government in El Salvador. The United Nations Observer Mission in El Salvador (Spanish acronym: ONUSAL) monitors the implementation of human rights and military reforms. ONUSAL includes a Canadian contingent of 55 military personnel.
