UN Observation Mission-India and Pakistan: 1965-1966

In 1965, Indian and Pakistani troops clashed along the India-Pakistan border. The fighting escalated to a savage level before a ceasefire was eventually negotiated. The United Nations (UN) dispatched the UN India-Pakistan Observer Mission (UNIPOM) to supervise the ceasefire. While the first UN Observer Mission was deployed in the Indian province of Kashmir, UNIPOM maintained observers along the entire length of the India-Pakistan border. Of the 160 troops that comprised UNIPOM, 112 were Canadian.
